I Remember When...

“I used to leave the dock to go out for $10K of pollock, and come back with $50K of black cod, $8K of p. cod, and kill off another $100K of halibut and crab each trip, along with enough king salmon to BBQ for the family for the summer – but then they started 100% observer coverage.”

When did the major focus of this blog shift away from the observer gaming? All trawl vessels in Kodak use some form of gaming while sole and arrow tooth fishing. They would get shut down if they didn't. Do you anticipate observer gaming worsening or improving? When?

Nothing has changed, except that there is a hell of a lot more involved than gaming. We are talking about a sustainable ocean that will support coastal residents for generations to come. Targets are good, but being short sighted is just that. What's wrong with a little black humor?

Observer program is reformed to be worse, producing a helluva lot of data that will have little bearing on controlling the wanton waste rampant in the Gulf drag fisheries.

A lot is at stake. I agree. Especially for those of us involved in trawl fisheries who don't want anything to do with discards or working around a system that is gamed. I guess when it's rationalized we will all be content to watch the quota holders fish while we sit on the beach. Fix the gaming and you will eliminate the problems.

I'm with you on that. The system is rigged.
