Getting Wasted: The Tragedy Continues (photos censored)

The pictures which were here were anonymously donated to someone who gave them to someone who gave them to Wiglaf for the tholepin blog.  These photos of illegal activity have since been claimed by the skipper of that vessel who filed with the Google blogging service and they have since been taken down by Google.  This is part of a larger conspiracy by the trawling fleet cooperative to limit their exposure to the public for the secret damages they are doing to the Gulf of Alaska.  Personal threats are received regularly here against Wiglaf and others suspected of being him/her.  Ask not what the Gulf of Alaska can do for you, ask what you can do for the Gulf of Alaska. In the future always save anything you find of interest here and repost elsewhere.  These supposed copyright infringement claims do not have to be substantiated for Google to take them down.  We do not blame Google.  They are simply covering their ass.  Blogs are the last potential for freedom of the press.  But freedom of press in America is an illusion after all.  wt
Picture removed by Google.
Question: Why does a web host or blogging service provider get DMCA takedown notices?
Answer: Many copyright claimants are making complaints under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, Section 512(c)m a safe-harbor for hosts of "Information Residing on Systems or Networks At Direction of Users." This safe harbors give providers immunity from liability for users' possible copyright infringement -- if they "expeditiously" remove material when they get complaints. Whether or not the provider would have been liable for infringement by materials its users post, the provider can avoid the possibility of a lawsuit for money damages by following the DMCA's takedown procedure when it gets a complaint. The person whose information was removed can file a counter-notification if he or she believes the complaint was erroneous.

Remember, this is in metric tons.  So 99 X 2200 = 217,800 pounds X $7 =  $1,525,600 in ex-vessel value, last week. http://www.fakr.noaa.gov/2011/car120_goa.pdf

Of special interest, while Miss Leona whores through the cod, Alliance is heavily observed and apparently knows how to trawl.  Elizabeth F meanwhile sets the standard for stewardship.  .http://www.fakr.noaa.gov/2011/pscinfo.htm

Enough said.....charter sector need look no farther then these charts/figures. Trawl boats are the primary reason for the quickly disappearing halibut resource. Focus your angst at trawl sector and join our fight to save what is left.

my god!!! uncaring selfish bastards.

a pox on ye and all those who abide with them in their houses.

Cool pictures.
1 tow for an observed arrowtooth trip is unacceptable. That means 2 days of fishing where they throw away
???% of 250-300k.

You do realize what the implications behind 1 observed tow for Arrowtooth fishing are don't you? It's way worse than anyone realizes. There is no "waiting for FMP to rationalize it and get better coverage." They're stealing from other sectors by underreporting their bycatch and at the same time cutting their throat by throwing away all the fish besides arrowtooth.

Since Mr. Medred's recent article I've come to realize that noone in the media is capable or has the credibility to put this out there. It's pretty much up to you.

I can use all the help I can get. Thanks.

Month of October Arrowtooth stats: 5456 tons landed( 10,916,000lb) 18 observed trips comprised of 64 tows total. 170,500 pounds landed for each observed tow. 1/3 coverage or heavily gamed? What difference in Halibut mortality would 1% make for this month? 109 thousand pounds per point. Just for Arrowtooth.

They're just numbers. They don't represent any facts or truths. That's it simply.

Hey Julie... We know you are a paid lobbyist and do it well! But please understand there are others in this equation. Your legacy in Kodiak and AK will ultimately be determined on whether you realize that this waste of one of Americas premier fish should not continue on the "smoke and mirrors" basis that is now your agenda!

Trawl sector is required to use careful release methods for PSC. Why is this asshole treating these halibut in this manner? Who is this guy and why is he not behind bars along with his skipper. Al/Julie explain......Must be an anomaly, most crew do not act like this. WRONG, I believe this everday behavior of trawl sector when no observer. GIVE US CAMERAS NOW

It is well known that draggers who do not own IFQ feel deep resentment over that profitable fishery and see halibut, crab, and salmon as simply species in the way of their profits. So every halibut or crab killed is one less impediment to their fishery. Death reigns supreme on unobserved draggers.

Julie....are you and trawl participants as soul less as your behavior exhibits in these pics? Is there so much disdain for halibut that your sector condones and encourages the wanton destruction of this species? STOP THE CARNAGE NOW we may still have time to turn this around.

I am starting a black ball list of crew who work as trawl crew and willingly participate with their dirty skippers/owners in the manner depicted in these photos. Any support on this blog?

Let's play name that crewman.....
anyone KNOW?????

Somebody call immigration and deport these oregon/washington bastards!

Jackknifing, which is similar to bootstrapping, is used in statistical inference to estimate the bias and standard error (variance) of a statistic, when a random sample of observations is used to calculate it. The basic idea behind the jackknife variance estimator lies in systematically recomputing the statistic estimate leaving out one or more observations at a time from the sample set. From this new set of replicates of the statistic, an estimate for the bias and an estimate for the variance of the statistic can be calculated.

Wiglaf said...

There is a special consideration with the jackknife, particularly with the delete-1 observation jackknife. It should only be used with smooth differentiable statistics, that is: totals, means, proportions, ratios, odd ratios, regression coefficients, etc.; but not with medians or quantiles. This clearly may become a practical disadvantage or not depending on the needs of the user. This disadvantage is usually the argument against the jackknife in benefit to the bootstrap. More general jackknifes than the delete-1, such as the delete-m jackknife, overcome this problem for the medians and quantiles by relaxing the smoothness requirements for consistent variance estimation....Wiki

His name is irrelevant. They're doing it as a group. The observer gaming is the real outrage.

This Oregon drag crewman appears to be holding fish for the camera. May as well have a rod/reel instead. The boys back home would be proud.

Kodiak owned boat. Skipper is responsible for crew. Kodiak owner is responsible for skipper.

Wiglaf said...

Right. Group is responsible. NPFMC is responsible for group. Enforcement is asleep.

Anonymous said...

This photo would have been helpful at just completed NPFMC meet in Dutch. Council still lacks the will to punish and hold accountable those who act like this. what will it take to force the council to change will we have time????

Anonymous said...

Asleep or in bed with them.

Anonymous said...

Someone should go interrogate Al Burch about the politicians he's bought.

Anonymous said...

It's not that the NPFMC lacks the will to enforce or reduce bycatch regs.

The npfmc IS made up of those that profit most from business as usual. They have co-opted the native reps and made them into bycatch profiteers too.

Anonymous said...

Here's a challenge for you: Instead of showing us there is a high bycatch rate during september cod trawling show us how they manipulate the 1/3 observer days year round to minimize their observed halibut mortality. You are painting a grain of sand when we need a picture of a sand castle.

Anonymous said...

This makes me physically ill..... no respect for the sea, no respect for we longliners, no respect for anything but profit. There is a good reason they are called drag tags.

Anonymous said...

Looks like they're going for some shallow water action. Better get on that.

Anonymous said...

Anyone find out who that guy is yet?

Anonymous said...

The real question is: Did he stab the other halibut lying in front of him or just the one on his pew? Someone should ask him.

Rainy Morning Quote
"95% of trawl bycatch is caught while bottom fishing, meaning Halibut. This is directly responsible for stock decline.
Don't believe me though. I'm just some anonymous dude, and I'll admit I don't have any PhD's(player hater degrees). Just a bloody cod knife I use to shank halibut out the shit shoot as they come across the conveyor." ...Anonymous post on Deckboss.

Anonymous said...

Do you think it was the same guy?

Wiglaf said...

No. But as an all too common practice, it is representative of handling behavior. Hook stripping by the cod fleet can't be ignored either but that is another fight. Without observers, the easiest way is the way it is done. Simply human nature.
